Job Summary

The Department of Communication and Media at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Media Studies or a related field for an appointment beginning Fall 2022.

Preferred research interests for this position include disinformation analysis and detection; media bias; public communication and rhetoric; media dissemination and representation of science such as climate change or health; democracy, social justice and equity in algorithmic media; or the effect of social media enclaves and partisan online communities on democratic processes.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or other relevant doctorate, or a foreign degree equivalent, in Media Studies, Communication, or a closely related field at the time of appointment. Candidates must also present evidence of successful collegiate teaching.

The ideal candidate will have additional training in or collaborative research with computer science, data science, or data visualization. The department currently offers a B.S. in Communication, Media & Design, an M.S. in Communication & Rhetoric, and a Ph.D. in Communication & Rhetoric.

The successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate level that reflect their expertise and contribute to the department’s expansion in the areas of media ethics and public communication about science. We are particularly interested in scholars who take an intersectional approach to issues social identity such as gender identity, socio-economic class, religion, ethnicity, or race.
