Job Summary

The Assistant Dean for Student Success for Under Represented Minority Students (URMs) reports to the Dean of Student Success and under the direction of the Dean is responsible for providing leadership and direction of student success initiatives through Rensselaer’s signature approach to the student experience, Clustered Learning Advocacy and Support for Students (CLASS)The Assistant Dean collaborates with other portfolio areas throughout Student Life and across the Institute to advance efforts to foster the academic success for Under-Represented Minority Students. The Assistant Dean provides leadership in developing and implementing programs and policies, which support the Institute’s vision for the recruitment, matriculation, success and graduation of students who come from under-represented backgrounds (URMs).

(CLASS)- Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students is a comprehensive approach to the student experience at Rensselaer. Through ongoing support, guidance, and co-curricular activities, CLASS connects students to a network of faculty, staff, and other students, ensuring that they are part of a strong community of learners. As students strive to become the leaders of tomorrow, CLASS helps them develop the intellectual agility, multicultural sophistication, and global awareness that will enable them to change the world.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree preferably in related fields such as sociology, psychology, student personnel, counseling, social work, higher education or related fields, etc.
  • 5 or more years of experience in higher education and demonstrated knowledge in research and practice in the field of diversity, justice, critical methodologies, and equity in education.
  • Experience with assessment
  • Experience with working with inter-personal, inter-cultural, civic programs in higher education setting

Applicants must meet stated minimum education and experience requirements.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated high degree of effective listening and communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Conflict Resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate across many departments, functions, divisions, communities
  • Experience in developing and implementing diversity and inclusion programs in a higher education environment
  • Ability to articulate, develop, and manage program and improvement initiatives
  • Ability to provide exemplary response to diverse constituencies while maintaining impartiality and integrity
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and social justice for underrepresented and marginalized groups
  • Demonstrated experience working with communities with a focus in diversity, equity and social justice


Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required


Local travel between campus locations only
