Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Support and Resource Centers (AVP), the Director of Multicultural Programs is responsible for developing and implementing programs and policies, which support the Institute's vision to grow and sustain a diverse and inclusive learning, living and working environment through a series of experiences aligned with Rensselaer’s signature approach to the student experience, Clustered Learning Advocacy and Support for Students (CLASS). The Director will develop, implement, and assess outcomes from initiatives designed to foster a sense of campus inclusiveness and that provide experiences and resources that enhance diversity, respect and multicultural sophistication. The director will assist the AVP in partnering with institutional leaders across the Institute to plan and deliver programs and services that address the needs of students who come from diverse backgrounds, and will ensure that structures are in place that facilitate dialogue and effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in elated fields such as sociology, psychology, student personnel, counseling, higher education, etc.
  • At least 5 years of experience and demonstrated knowledge in research and practice in the field of diversity, justice, critical methodologies, and equity in education.
  • Experience in developing, managing, and/or delivery of diversity and inclusion programs in a higher education environment
  • Experience with working with complex inter-personal, inter-cultural, civic programs in higher education setting.

  • Demonstrated high degree of effective listening and communication skills, verbal and written
  • Demonstrated high degree of inter-personal and inter-cultural competencies
  • Conflict Resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully collaborate across many department, functions, divisions, communities
  • Ability to articulate, develop, and manage program and improvement initiatives
  • Demonstrated Experience in public speaking
  • Ability to provide exemplary response to diverse constituencies while maintaining impartiality and integrity
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and social justice for underrepresented and marginalized groups


Business Hours with occasional weekends or evenings required


Local travel between campus locations only


Incidental driving possible, but not required
