Job Summary

The Animal Care Technician (Bioresearch Technician) will perform all tasks related to the day-to-day operation of the animal research facility. These tasks will include animal care and husbandry and facility sanitization and maintenance. The Animal Care Technician also will support basic research procedures, as directed by the Operations Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two (2) or more years of relevant experience with laboratory rodent husbandry

Relevant combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in related field
  • AVMA accredited Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology or Laboratory Animal Science 
  • AALAS certification
  • Experience working in a scientific or research environment
  • Experience with anesthesia procedures or surgery
  • Experience with management of transgenic animal lines
 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Basic knowledge of federal regulations regarding animal maintenance and handling
  • Knowledge of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (“the Guide”)
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisor, faculty, technicians, animal care workers, inspectors and veterinarians
  • Experience sanitizing rooms and equipment
  • Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports as mandated by the Animal Welfare Act and “the Guide”
  • Ability to make careful observation and objective assessment
  • Basic knowledge of research animal biology, husbandry and health
  • Knowledge of basic animal research procedures
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems
  • Ability to work independently

Shift

Non Standard Shift: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4pm; rotating weekends/holidays

Starting Salary/Rate

Expected hiring range: $19.00 - $21.15

This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
