Job Summary

The Robotic Lab + Woodshop Supervisor (under the direction of the Woodshop Manager), will serve as the director of the school’s Robotic Lab as well as assist in a range of additional day-to-day duties throughout the shop facilities. Provide essential instructional support and technical expertise specific to robotic technology in support of the school’s entire academic and research enterprise. The supervisor will be a champion of integrating advanced manufacturing technologies with critical design-driven workflows. In addition to these specialized responsibilities, the supervisor will also assist in the direction and day-to-day operations of the woodshop and its technology. The supervisor will be responsible for reviewing, evaluating and approving on-going projects and methods proposed by students and faculty; will assist with the purchasing needs of the shop, and work with faculty throughout the year to establish an effective and streamlined interface between the design studios (i.e. pedagogical priorities) and the full-range of technologies offered throughout the shop.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Architecture

  • Three or more years of experience in robotic technology and a range of material practices commonly found in woodworking shops

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge and familiarity with 3D printing

  • Experience with CNC machine operation, AutoCAD, Mastercam, and 3D modeling programs

  • Prior supervisory experience in an academic or research setting

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture with Relevant combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

Some Graduate Study in:

  • Interest in automation

  • Basic experience with electronics and wiring

  • Familiarity with mechanical systems and tools

  • Willingness to learn new skills

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Rhinoceros, Python C+++, and Grasshopper 3D modeling software
  • Knowledge in the safe operation and maintenance of multiple types of machines and hand tools, including but not limited to: Band saw, table saw, drill press, plainer and sanders
  • General understanding of construction and materials
  • Ability to learn fabrication technology through manufacturer’s training and research
  • Planning, organizing and effective time management skills
  • Computer literacy, including ability to use a variety of software packages
  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to document and compose procedures to build a knowledge base.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive environment and work with a diverse population
  • Ability to remain calm and composed when dealing with difficult situations or people

Representative Job Duties

  1. Provide specialized robotic instruction and direction to all shop users (students, staff, and faculty). Strengthen the Robotic Lab each year through advanced computational programming, development of customized accessory equipment that expands the platform’s capabilities, and implementation of best practices to elevate the lab’s international reputation and impact.

  2. Manage the day-to-day operations of the lab, including operating and maintaining robotic equipment and performing fabrication tasks that require frequent reconfiguration and attention.

  3. Maintain the booking schedule and material supplies, and coordinate the hiring, supervision, and yearly contributions of student interns.

  4. Oversee and maintain all digital fabrication equipment, machines, and power tools throughout the fabrication shop in compliance with safety regulations and accreditation standards. Ensure security of the shop and equipment, including access for students, faculty, and staff.

  5. Advise users on automated technologies including 3D printing, CNC, laser cutters, and multi-axis robotic fabrication. Support end effector design and implementation for studios and faculty projects.

  6. Research state-of-the-art tools and manufacturing methods, recommend new equipment acquisitions, and maintain existing equipment. Lead continuous development and improvement of Robotic Lab facilities by developing prototypes, modifying tools, and optimizing work-cell setups within budget.

  7. Order, receive, and store materials, maintaining accurate records of inventory, orders, and material usage.

  8. Supervise and train new and existing student monitors in the use of advanced manufacturing technologies and woodworking equipment.

  9. Ensure compliance with operating and safety regulations for the protection of the facility, property, and personnel.

  10. Collaborate with Troy-based and Brooklyn-based faculty (associated with CASE at Industry City) to align design studio priorities with Robotic Lab and woodshop capabilities, under the direction of the Woodshop Manager.

Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required Weekends and Nights for Institute event.

Local travel between campus locations only

Starting Salary/Rate

Expected hiring range: $64,000

This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
