Job Summary:

 The Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach will oversee all operations of the Mueller Center weight room and assist the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach in designing and implementing programs for all varsity athletic programs. Specifically responsible for the design, implementation and monitoring of safe and effective strength and conditioning programs to improve performance of club sports, the general population, and the Men's & Women's varsity teams. The Assistant Coach will assist in the oversight of East Campus Strength and Conditioning Center during assigned shifts and during absence of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach when available.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related field from an accredited institution
  • One (1) or more years experience working as a coach, assistant coach, or intern in the field of strength and conditioning
  • One of the following:
    • NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification
    • NSCA Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach certification
    • CSCCA Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified certification

Relevant combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related field from an accredited institution
  • Experience training athletes of all abilities in a variety of sports 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of strength training, speed, agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular conditioning
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate a variety of student-athletes
  • Ability to initiate, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to an effective strength and conditioning program
  • Ability to convey a clear and concise message while communicating, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives
  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems

Representative Job Duties:

  • Develop year round strength and conditioning programs to improve varsity athletic performance. Programs include but are not limited to: Speed and power development, Training cycles and phases, planning of appropriate and specific sequences, sets, repetitions and recovery periods. Conduct performance testing and develop summer manuals
  • Collaborate with Athletic Trainers to develop rehabilitation programs for varsity and club athletes and with campus Health Educator to assist individuals with specific health related needs to achieve lifestyle and fitness goals
  • Design safe and effective strength and conditioning programs to improve performance of general student population and staff which include: supervision and guidance during workouts, teaching proper techniques for use of equipment, establishing and enforcing safety guidelines, nutrition counseling and balance and agility development
  • Supervise and monitor performance of student workers assigned to the Mueller Center Strength and Conditioning Floor, and East Campus Strength and Conditioning Center when needed. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: - Training, visual performance appraisals and feedback on overall job performance in a professional manner
  • Provide supervision of facilities when in use by patrons, membership, activities/programs, scheduling, and member services. Represent Rensselaer to the campus community and beyond to insure that all personal and program needs are met in a safe manner. Provide information as needed to patrons requesting scheduling, signups, inquiries and other fitness questions
  • Collaborate with the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach/Director of Mueller Center to review and revise departmental policies and procedures for the ECAV Strength and Conditioning Center and the Mueller Center. Ensure compliance with Institute and department policies and procedures
  • Provide input to the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach in the development of the performance plan and operating budget. Create equipment plan/budget for Mueller Center Strength and Conditioning on a yearly basis
  • Assist with oversight and referral of custodial, maintenance and new equipment needs. Check all equipment daily for any maintenance and safety issues. Report all problems to the Director or Head strength Coach and take the appropriate steps to have equipment repaired
  • Assist in the development and management of systems and procedures for: member services, member programs and inventory as well as safety and security. Respond to all incidents/emergencies according to established procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required

Travel:

Local travel between campus locations only

Driving:

Incidental driving possible, but not required

Starting Salary/Rate:

Expected hiring range: $62,354 / yr

This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
