Job Summary

The Supervisor of Landscape Operations is responsible for leading all aspects of a progressive landscape management program for Rensselaer’s campus. The supervisor oversees all aspects of landscape management, which includes: ornamental landscapes design and maintenance, greenhouse operations, athletic fields and venues, lawns and rough-cut areas, irrigation, hardscapes, snow removal, and event support. The supervisor oversees the performance of assigned staff including the safe operation of equipment and usage of chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in In a Landscape related field.
  • Five years commercial grounds maintenance experience including two years of supervisory experience. Supervisory experience may include experience as a lead worker, project coordinator, or other similar role
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Valid New York State Pesticide Technician’s or Applicator’s License in category 3a. or the ability to obtain within one year of appointment
  • A relevant combination of education, training, and directly related experience may be substituted for a degree

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a university setting
  • Experience in landscape design
  • Experience in athletic field maintenance both natural and synthetic
  • Experience with snow removal operations
  • Experience with irrigation systems

  • Effective supervisory skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to communicate and interact with diverse customers and constituencies
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and perform arithmetic functions
  • Planning, organizing and effective time management skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial and other data
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives
  • Ability to use a personal computer (Word, Excel, Outlook including job specific software)
  • Ability to operate and train other on all landscape, turf maintenance and snow removal equipment
  • Ability to provide day-to-day direction to staff and lead projects
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must have the ability to work flexible hours which may include, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays


Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required


Local travel between campus locations only


Driving a personal vehicle for non-passenger use
