Job Summary

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering (MANE) at RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in Troy, NY, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Nuclear Engineering. The emphasis is on individuals at the Assistant (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenured) levels. Exceptionally qualified individuals in all areas of nuclear engineering are encouraged to apply. Special consideration will be given to candidates with experience in topics related to health physics and radiological engineering, nuclear criticality safety, radiation detection, and nuclear data. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is committed to increasing the diversity of its faculty and seeks the broadest possible candidate pool for consideration.

Candidates must possess an earned Ph.D., or foreign degree equivalent, in Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related field. The successful candidate must also be able to demonstrate the potential to carry out the following duties: develop and maintain an internationally recognized, interdisciplinary program of funded research in Nuclear Engineering, to actively and meaningfully contribute to the core graduate and undergraduate teaching mission of MANE, and engage in department, institute, and professional service activities.

MANE research addresses some of the world’s most pressing technological challenges—from energy and sustainable development to materials, manufacturing, controls, adaptive and resilient systems, biotechnology, and human health. The department's annual research expenditures total more than $15 million. More than 1,400 undergraduate students and 230 graduate students are currently enrolled in MANE.

Faculty have access to world-class research facilities and an atmosphere that promotes interdisciplinary collaborations:

  • The New York State Center for Future Energy Systems conducts fundamental and applied research to accelerate the development of energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies.
  • The Center for Materials, Devices and Integrated Systems aims to advance next-generation electronic and optical devices, manufacturing and robotics, integrated biomaterial devices, energy harvesting and storage, electric transmission/distribution, responsive and adaptive built environments, and nanostructured composite materials.
  • The Center for Computational Innovation and the Scientific Computation Research Center house one of the most powerful computers for AI applications - the Artificial Intelligence Multiprocessing Optimized System (AiMOS).
  • The Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies and the Center for Engineering and Precision Medicine are engaged in both fundamental and translational biomedical research.
  • The Institute for Data Exploration and Applications and the Experimental Media and the Cognitive Immersive Systems Lab provide new and exciting opportunities to manipulate and experience data and cognitive computing.
  • The Gaerttner LINAC Center includes a high power 50 MeV electron LINAC currently undergoing an upgrade to 140 MeV. This facility provides access to intense pulsed electron, photon, and neutron beams. The research at this center is focused on nuclear data for nuclear reactors and criticality safety applications.
  • Other research activity includes medical isotope production, and radiation damage to electronics. In addition to the LINAC center, the Nuclear Engineering Program at Rensselaer houses a unique low power (<100W) open pool reactor, and several teaching and research laboratories. These facilities provide an excellent opportunity to develop unique leading research and teaching programs.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1824, is America’s first technological research university. Rensselaer faculty and alumni represent 85 members of the National Academy of Engineering, 17 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 25 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 8 members of the National Academy of Medicine, 8 members of the National Academy of Inventors, and 5 members of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, as well as 6 National Medal of Technology winners, 5 National Medal of Science winners, and a Nobel Prize winner in Physics. With 7,000 students and over 100,000 living alumni, Rensselaer is addressing the global challenges facing the 21st century—to change lives, to advance society, and to change the world.
