Job Summary

The Director of Media Relations and Communications, reporting to the Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Relations, is responsible for overseeing and executing a proactive strategic and comprehensive news media program (print and non-print). The proactive communication programs are designed to strengthen the branding of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Director is expected to lead a proactive multi-faceted communications program and team to ensure that the goals and initiatives promulgated in the Rensselaer Plan and in each academic and administrative portfolio are effectively communicated internally and externally to constituencies. The Director is expected to establish relevant metrics and measures to ensure efficacy of the program. As a member of the SCER leadership team, the Director is expected to coordinate an integrated team-based communication program within the portfolio and assist with the development of the annual portfolio performance plan.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as journalism, communications, media relations, web-based communications or a science-related discipline
  • Seven (7) years of professional experience as a public relations professional, science writer, public information officer, communications professional, or in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience and high degree of comfort as an Institute spokesperson.
  • Experience in overseeing operational activities of the website(s) - specifically content
    creation and website maintenance.
  • Demonstrated proactive and successful experience in reputation management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree preferred, as well as management experience at a university, government agency, research laboratory, or scientific society. 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to take on complex situations and the ability to envision, articulate, and realize process and program improvements.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of constituents.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to serve as the Institute’s representative and spokesperson in a variety of venues.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.
  • Requires an ability to design, implement, and continuously improve programs and processes that achieve outcomes.
  • Requires a commitment to developing department staff, collaborating with Institute partners, and serving external customers.


Business Hours with occasional weekends or evenings required


Occasional overnight travel may be required(10% or less)


Incidental driving possible, but not required
