Job Summary

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, reporting to the Director of Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), will provide professional and technical EHS expertise across campus for internal and external customers. The EHS Specialist will oversee EHS programs and be proactive in implementing best practices, minimizing risk, and promoting a culture of environmental stewardship and safety throughout the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a related field
• Five (5) years of experience in environmental health and safety and regulatory compliance, preferably in an academic environment
• Valid US Driver's License

Relevant combinations of education, training and experience may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

• Formal training in RCRA, DOT, OSHA, DEP, EPA, and NFPA regulations
• 40 hour HAZWOPER certification
• Training or operational experience with environmental, safety, or quality management systems, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or OSHA VPP 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Knowledge of proper procedures for responding to emergencies involving hazardous chemical exposures
• Ability to provide training to other personnel on Environmental Health and Safety practices and programs.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Windows, or other technical tools in completing assignments.
• Ability to influence and coordinate EHS activity across Rensselaer Portfolios, resolve problems promptly, and develop alternate solutions when necessary.
• Ability to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions.
• Ability to communicate clearly and courteously.
• Strong planning, organizing, and practical time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to demonstrate commitment to higher education and work with a diverse population.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet established goals and objectives.
• Ability to work in fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
• Must be capable of meeting the medical qualifications specified in 29 CFR1910.134 for use of a respirator.

Shift

Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required

Travel

Local travel between campus locations only

Driving

Driving a personal vehicle for non-passenger use

Starting Salary/Rate

Expected hiring range: $70,000 - $77,000

Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
