Job Summary

Layout, install and perform maintenance on basic stone, brick and concrete structures (interior/exterior areas) involving but not limited to, buildings, walks, steps, and walls.  Work as a member of a versatile team performing remodeling and minor construction projects.  Also assist other trades with repair and maintenance work.   

Minimum Qualifications

Senior Mason

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Minimum 5 years of advanced masonry experience (including stone, brick, block, flat work, and plaster)

  • Valid U.S. driver's license

  • Must have ability to become Certified Lead Safe Renovator and ability to meet OSHA’s Lead Handler medical/respirator qualifications.
  • Must meet same lead/OSHA requirements as Regular Mason

Relevant combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered for both levels.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of masonry trade, equipment and tools
  • Working knowledge of basic industry trades including plumbing, painting, roofing, electrical, carpentry, sheet metal and duct work.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic functions
  • Ability to read and build from blue prints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools of the trade.
  • Ability to work on ladders, scaffolding, and personnel lifts.
  • Requires excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment or perform independently

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and perform complex work assignments related to stone, brick, tile and concrete masonry; using specialized materials such as epoxies, polymers and additives.
  • Read and follow blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated.
  • Mix ingredients according to standard ratios or parts for the specific requirement for mortar, concrete, plaster surface repairs or new installations.
  • Lay stone, bricks and foundations according to specifications, plans and building codes.  Ensure all courses are plumb and level.
  • Facilitates delivery of concrete from ready mix truck; levels concrete to specified depth and workable consistency; smoothes and shapes surfaces of freshly poured concrete; finishes concrete surfaces.
  • Removes rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces, and patches holes with appropriate materials; inspects and perform maintenance on pre-stressed concrete structures, such as parking garages.
  • Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete; erect scaffolding and ladders for performing work above ground level.
  • Install tape and finish sheet rock or drywall systems.
  • Assist with air conditioning installations, demolitions, painting, and carpentry.
  • Perform glass repair and glazing.
  • Coordinate and perform projects and remodeling with other shops.
  • Provide instruction and guidance to coworkers and when requested assign and coordinate the work of the team.
  • Perform duties of Permit Required Confined Space Entry Attendant as required.
  • Assist with snow removal as assigned.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies and work area in a neat and orderly condition; return equipment, tools and materials to the proper storage area.
  • Comply with safety rules and regulations for personal safety and safety of others.

Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required

Local travel between campus locations only

Driving

Driving a Rensselaer vehicle for non-passenger use

Starting Salary/Rate

Expected hiring range:

Sr. $27.50 - $31.00

This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
