Job Summary:

The Facilities Controls/Automation Shop Lead assists in the continuous, efficient, and safe day-to-day operations of the Automation Controls Shop. This position leads shop technicians, helps manage shop workload, monitors shop performance and fills in for the shop Supervisor when unavailable. This position will continue to participate in the HVAC shop with the needs on campus and will for the time still be involved with the HVAC shops on-call rotation. Along with other assigned tasks. This person will report to the Facilities Control Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Less than one year of paid experience working with interactive, computer-based, networked building management systems
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Ability to use a personal vehicle to transport self, tools, and small parts as required

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, drawings and create schematic and one-line diagrams
  • Strong leadership and supervisory abilities
  • Advanced planning, organizing and effective time management skills
  • Ability to prepare and interpret financial and other data
  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems 
  • Excellent client relations skills
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written forms
  • Knowledge of continuity of operations plans comprehensive emergency management plans and ability to produce results under pressure situations
  • Working knowledge of and experience using two or more types of facilities automation systems
  • Working knowledge of building energy control systems and ability to perform energy trending analysis
  • Knowledge of control system design and programming
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical/HVAC trades and system components
  • Knowledge of industry standards for building system maintenance
  • Use of hand and portable power tools, wiring diagrams, wire gauge, and electrical components
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member and to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex problems
  • Self-starter: sees what a job requires and does it
  • Remains calm, and able to respond and work quickly in high pressure/emergency situations
  • Must be flexible in work style; able to work effectively with project representatives and workers from all fields and levels
  • Continuous learner, i.e., keeps current with technological changes

Representative Job Duties:

  • Instruct and oversee the daily activities of assigned staff; respond to questions from staff regarding standard operating procedures. Provide on-the-job training for assigned staff. Provide oversight to ensure quality work and to facilitate learning and growth.
  • Work with supervisor to develop project plans and recommend staff assignments. 
  • Provide input to supervisor for staff performance evaluation; completes personnel actions and payroll, leads and directs unit in supervisor’s absence. 
  • Troubleshoot equipment when down; perform complex maintenance and repair; coordinate with internal or external experts (contractors) for complex repairs and assist with those repairs; follow-up to ensure all repairs are completed and equipment is functioning properly. 
  • Provide cost estimates as requested and order required materials through CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System). 
  • Perform preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment; develop pm procedures based on manufacturer’s recommendations and usage history. 
  • Install, maintain, and program a variety of digital control computer-based building maintenance systems; build and update equipment, procedure and scheduling data bases as equipment installations change; utilizes lap top computers in the field to diagnose and plan repairs. 
  • Participate in scheduled and emergency response (unscheduled) overtime work as assigned. Participate in the after-hours on-call rotation. 
  • Comply with safety rules and regulations for safety of self and others and property. Monitor assigned staff compliance with safety rules and regulations.

Shift:

Business Hours with weekends or evenings occasionally required

Travel:

Local travel between campus locations only

Driving:

Driving a personal vehicle for non-passenger use

Starting Salary/Rate:

Expected hiring range: $29.00 - $43.00

This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
