The ideal candidate will complement the existing strengths of the transportation program and ongoing research of the transportation faculty.

Of particular interest are the areas that contribute to the design and operations of smart, sustainable, resilient, and agile transportation systems including, but not limited to: AI/ML enabled transportation systems and traffic modeling, new technologies enabled transportation systems, behavioral modeling, freight transportation, network modeling, and traffic control and simulation. Outstanding candidates with expertise in other areas will also be considered.

Consistent with the Rensselaer Plan, the School of Engineering Performance Plan, and the Department’s Strategic Plan, an emphasis on smart systems, AI/ML, energy and the environment, and information technology, is highly desired.

Successful candidates may find it useful to collaborate with other researchers through various centers on campus including the Center for Infrastructure, Transportation, and the Environment (https://cite.rpi.edu/), Institute for Energy, the Built Environment, and Smart Systems (https://research.rpi.edu/ebess), the Center for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (www.nees.rpi.edu/), the Scientific Computation Research Center (www.scorec.rpi.edu/), the Lighting Research Center (www.lrc.rpi.edu), among others Rensselaer and School of Engineering centers (www.rpi.edu/research/research_centers.html).

The CEE Department at Rensselaer has a rich and distinguished history – CEE offered the first civil engineering (1835) and first environmental engineering (1960) degrees in the United States. Today, CEE has 18 faculty, ~250 UG and 70 graduate students, and offers degrees at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The department is highly interdisciplinary with faculty working across the theoretical/computational/experimental interfaces for each of the sub-disciplines: Environmental/Water, Geotechnical, Transportation, and Structures. Research in these areas has been supported by numerous federal and state agencies.
